I consider big woods hunting "the hard way".
I hunt a 15,000 acre piece of low fenced property that is a mix of swamp, hardwoods, praires, pines, and just about everything else you can think of EXCEPT agricultural fields and food plots. It's surrounded by miles and miles of public land on all sides.
Trying to pattern big woods deer is a completely different game than hunting farms where the food sources and bedding areas are obvious. I've done both, and for me it's much harder to hunt the big woods.
qzq, AMEN to every thing you said

. I had never hunted farmland until last year (I'm 33

), and man,it's night and day! I'm really looking forward to it this season, though I must say, there's a little more feeling of accomplishment when you arrow one of those big woods deer.
