RE: Bear Baiting, a "Double Standard"?
In PA there is no baiting for anything big game, nor birds. The only baiting that can be done is trapping.
In PA we have 1,000,000 hunters and if baiting were legal, that would devistate our bear population IMO.
I agree that baiting bears in PA should remain unlawful. I am however not against baiting bears in states that allow it. Hunter/bear relations may be at a number that baiting bears is a necessary tactic to ensure success and control numbers.
PA allows no baiting of deer but made it legal in certain management areas to lure deer out of non huntable lands and to help ensure success to adequately control the deer populations in those areas.
In Quebec where I hunted bears successfully over bait, it's not only necessary but probably the ONLY way they can be sure that adequate bears are taken. When I was in a treestand I was the only human being within 5 miles of myself. That is a HUGE area and the outfitter gets X many tags for an area. Without baiting not only would hunter/bear success go way down but nuisance bear reports would esculate.
In PA the known method of bear hunting is to scout and sit or take part in bear drives. Either way I've know guys who hunted their entire life and have NEVER seen a bear while hunting.
Bait or not to bait? I for the life of me can't imagine our own speaking up against a legal method in another state. We are after all our own worst enemies when it comes to our hunting future.
