I did a similar thing a few years ago. We were at the house, and looked out the back window, and right there 5yrds from the house was a bedded deer...

I knew somehting wasnt right, and when we opened the door and he made no attempt to run, we could see he had been hit by a car. We called the County sherriffs dept. and they said to go ahead and shoot it. (I really didnt think they could let us.... small town...?) Anyway, I stepped out and pulled the trigger on a 30-30. It jumped up and tried to run up the hill, 3 legs broke, 1 hanging by skin. He fell over and all was finished, ended up being a buck that had just shed its antlers, one side was still bloody, so I thought maybe it fell off when it got hit, but I never could find it.
