RE: License Fee Increases in Pa
You're right BTB, and I agree to an extent. Most of us agree that the residents should get first crack at doe tags, but the PGC could allot a certain number of non-resident tags for each county if they really need to play that game with the tags, which I feel is ludicrous in some parts of the state 'cause you are being over-run with does in certain areas, which Alt recently tried to eliminate with his recommendation of the early rifle season.
Up until recently there was this big squabble over Alt wanting a rifle season in October to eliminate unbred does. When asked about allowing archers to try and help to take them out he simply said there would not be enough killed to be effective. I believe they should at least be given the chance to help the cause, and bring the season back more into the way it used to be, by allowing hunters MORE freedoms, not less. They could even allow a week of doe in the beginning of rifle season too, this would also help, and effectively balance out the "they've got more freedoms than we do" syndrome. To me, it's not all rocket science as some feel it is, and depending upon where you go there are plenty of good deer in your state. (that's why we do not want to go elsewhere to another County! We've found our spot!) BUT, we would like the opportunity to go home with some meat for the freezer if one presents itself, we travel too far and spend too much money to watch deer after deer walk by. We are only there for a week! This past season I watched far too many does and lesser bucks walk by my stand that I could've harvested, they are like locusts in the area I hunt.Every year there are simply more does in this area since the lottery was established. And of course, it doesn't matter what kind of management program is established, when you have 25-man organized drives during rifle season, nothing much gets away in a given area except what you are NOT hunting for!(does and lesser bucks) Want bigger bucks? Curb that style of hunting for a year or two! Not trying to pick on anyone, just stating realistic options that would definately work.
Anyway, it'll be very interesting to see how many non-residents will actually hunt PA this year with the new additional restrictions.(not many, I'm willing to bet!) Residents cannot manage the herd without non-resident help,(no way) and the PGC cannot afford to lose out on the NR fees coming into the State and the money we spend while we're there. It's a shame, 'cause like I said I and my crew really love hunting there, beautiful State with friendly people. New York and IL however are looking better all of the time, unfortunately!
