i myself shoot a 12 ga 3" ....but my little brother uses a remmington 20 ga....we found that 3" # 5 federals shoot very well, he killed a tom at 25 yards deader than a doornail with those....also the 3" #6 winchester pattern really well...my cousin also shoots a remmington 20 gauge with #6 winchesters and he dropped a tom at 40 yards.
