RE: PA guys - get any turkeys yet?
i have to update.....monday i went out alone for the first time....they roosted on a diffrent hill from normal....abotu ruined my dad i was about to leave and try to make the school bus!!..walked around for an hour blowing the crow call to locate...nothing!! not one gobble...before that i did hear 3 gobbles miles away across 2 creeks and a steep steeo hills....went back....figured they use that trail to feed and strut...maybe they will come up on the hill i was on...sit down and call with my box and my glass for an hour off an on about every 20mins or so....about 8 i hear gobble obble obble!! i was like no way im hearing things..close my eyes again...gobble obble obbbble!! i was like YA! he was about 70-100yds away and running my way id guess....hit my box call excitedly to seal the deal..he went nuts....a thunderous gobble....got my gun up and ready...805 i was tagging my first turkey....a mature longbeard..not the biggest in the woods but a nice first....he carried a 8 3/4 inch rope and 3/4 inch spurs...he was a heavy bugger.....not sure on the weight....i dont have a scale....few days later im STILL smiling! i did it all myself from scouting and finding them to seting up and calling......man am i proud of myself.....i owe it to dad for teaching me everything...but i knew what to do and did it....only thing he couldnt teach was patience because that was his weak spot...and thats what i taught myself and i feel thats what killed that bird was my patience....not hearing a turkey at all for an hour..most guys i know would been gone by then!..not me...i knew them turkeys to well.....i packed a drink and got comfy....i planned on sitting there until 12 on that trail becuase i knew they used it that often......all unfolded perfectly.....i felt so great carrying him down the hill and up the other one..then down the road with a great smile on my face...
