It really depends on what part of the season you are talking about (hunting). During the first couple weeks (archery) I would set my standards pretty high, especially if I knew there was a P&Y (higher than 130") running around.

Towards the opening of muzzleload season I would hunt more for the meat, but still watch out for the rut action. When firearm (Dog) season comes I would shoot anything older than a year, because it is just a matter of time before he/she ends up in someone elses truck.
This is contradictory. If it was inevitable that all the young deer would be shot, you could never start out the season holding out for a nice buck, because it would already have been killed the previous year.
