Default RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

Well I have had one with a bow, I spined her when she jumped the string, it was weird, she had both her front legs side by side, so when she went down she also went back which caused me to hit the tip of her shoulder blade which put the arrow into her spine. She hit the ground like I had shot her with a 30-30! I had to put a second one through her lungs to finish what I had started.

The other experience I had with spining a deer was with a gun, I did something I will never do again, I neck shot a doe because I did not want her to run because I already had a one mile drag as it was. Well I hit right where I was aiming and she dropped like a ton of lead bricks and never moved. I though " well you don' t get a quicker or cleaner kill than that!" . Man was I wrong, I climbed out of the tree and walked the 100 yards calmly up to her to start the field dressing and noticed she was still breathing! I am thinking there is no way that deer can be breathing, I put it right through her spine! Well even though she was paralyzed from the neck down she sure was, so I put one through her brain and the job was done!

Breaking or shattering a deer spine does not garauntee a quick humane kill and the look in thier eyes as you finish the job haunts you for a long time! It happens sometimes though, and when it does it is our job to finish the job as quickly and humanely as possible.
