I have heard from many gunsmiths that the Remington Model 700 does well with a pressure point under the barrel about 2" from the end of the stock. Don't know why.
They shoot better pressure bedded because they are very cheaply made barrels that have had no stress relief done (much like every other domestic mass produced barrel) to them making them vibrate inconsistantly from shot to shot. Putting a little tension on the barrel preloads the barrel with a bit of stress which is at least repeatable from shot to shot.
