RE: What's your go to weapon?
Mathews LX bow...
Tried rifle hunting and I like it but all of my big game kills have been with a bow. 12 deer including Mulie's and Blacktail. Bull elk, both Rosevelts and Rocky Mtn and Rio Grand turkeys all with a bow.
Shoot a Remington 870 for ducks and goose.
I noticed nobody has mentioned Winchester, I do own a pre-1964 model 70 in 30-06. Shooting a Nosler Partion @165 grains with Reloader 22 powder, 3x9 scope and a traditional american walnut stock.
I also have a Hawkin .50 traditional muzzleloader which I set up with a peep sight, no scopes or inlines allowed in Oregon. I really like the muzzleloader but have not taken any game with it.
In Oregon, you must choose which weapon you are to use for the big game season. I noticed in other states you have multiple options for taking your deer. We don't have that option. Its what ever you apply for gun, bow, or muzzleloader. If you are an archer you can only take deer and elk with a bow unless you draw a special permit and those are for does most of the time. You can hunt Bears with what ever is approved but no baiting or hounds so its pretty much spot and stalk, have you seen these mountains.
