Do you know exactly what weight it's at now?? Perhaps it's at 40lbs and you need to turn it down. If there is any way to get to a bow draw weight scale that would be my first step. You must know exactly what it's at now in order to turn it down safely. Make sure you stay within the factory limits as to how much you can back it down. As mentioned you should be able to get it to 28 or so pounds. It's quite possible (if it was shipped to you) that it arrived maxed at 40lbs (or even a couple lbs higher) so you really need to find out where it's at.
