RE: Boraxing your trophy
Trapper,
Borax only speeds up drying and really in no way treats the flesh to prevent bug infestation at some later time. The feather butts on the fan need to be cleaned of all flesh and fat then boraxed. The wings have a lot of muscle tissue that needs to be removed if you haven' t already. Take your knife and clean all flesh away from the underside of the wings then add the borax. If you really want them all to shine. Before boraxing wash in a bath of Dawn and cool water, rinse multiple times until water is clean, soak up excess moisture with a clean towel. Soak in coleman fuel for a few minutes. WARNING: DO NOT GET NEAR ANY KIND OF SPARK WHILE DOING THIS. Remove from fuel and allow to air dry some outside. Take a blow dryer and use the warm setting to blow dry the feathers completely, until the down is fluffed. You will need to preen the wing feathers into their proper position and if you have removed enough fat and flesh from the tail the feathers will freely move. Arrange the feathers in proper order and spread then bondo the feather butts in that position.
If all of this sounds like too much of a job take it to a reputable taxidermist that can properly preserve your trophy.
