I have read in the Drury Brothers book that they too base alot of their sits on the moon phases. They stated that when the moon rises, being that its actually visible in the sky during the day is a great time to be in the woods. Is that what you were refering to when you say the moon being directly overhead?
Probably in part. If you look at any solar/lunar charts, the moon minor and major "transit" is the overhead/underfoot times. I would say the when they see the moon on its way up, the moon is on its way to its major transit. No doubt about it, when the transit falls close to traditional movement times (morn/eve), I see an extended increase in deer on being on their feet. Say the transit is 0930...deer will want to be up and feeding around that time, drawing out that period that they feel safe moving anyways. These are the mornings that can really be good from daylight all the way up until like 1030 if you are sitting somewhere to catch deer headed to bed.
