RE: lip locked
I' d have to think JoeA may have it. If there is a boss tom in the area who already has his hens, he doesn' t need to talk. And if this jake has snagged him a hen, he ain' t sayin a word for fear that the boss will kick his butt and take his lady. The gobble tube is a good call as long as you don' t have other hunters in the area. Opening week in eastern WA, unless your on your land, it ain' t likely that you' re alone. Watch your back if you' re gobbling.
The other thing you could do is a flydown cackle followed by some really aggressive cutting if you KNOW there are toms in the area. If that doesn' t fire him up, you may make his hens mad enough to bring him along with them for an altercation. I know you are trying to hunt before school, but you might have good luck this weekend during mid morning when the hens slip off and Tommy gets lonely. There are so many birds over there, take a locator call with you and strike out for another area at daybreak. Once you locate a vocal tom, move in for a set-up.
