I asked the same question several years ago when I was buying my wife a rifle to hunt with. I own several 7mm's and it would have made perfect sense for me to go with the 7mm-08. However after researching each gun I decided to go with the .260 and I do not regret it one bit. I LOVE it and when my bride is not at the camp I take it with me if I am hunting from a climber or loc on. I have killed several deer with it and she killed one opening day a few years back. We shoot the 120 gr accutip and I have yet had a deer that did not drop in it's tracks or at the most do a flip. The first deer I killed with it was standing 315 yards from my stand down a fire lane and she did a flip and didn't move after that. I've killed them as close as 50 yards too and when it hits it does some damage.
The problem with asking opinions on a forum is that everybody has their own opinion and most of the time are not open to anyone else's. I like the 7mm-08 as well but, if I were to buy another small gun like my wife's I wouldn't hesitate to buy another .260
your story mirrors mine, as i own several .284 cals, buti bought the misses a model 7 in 260, and well now i carry it 98% of the time[&:]
if i was limited to buying ammo (i reload so its not an issue) i would opt for the 08 simply because you can get ammo for it anywhere, and if you roll your own you get a wider selection of bullets, but i love both cals, and either will be fine for deer
