I would like your opinion on which of these two rifles would be more desirable ....a Browning Safari FN Mauser made in 1967 in a 270 cal and about 90% ...or a Winchester model 70 pre 64 made in 1963 in a 243 cal and about 95% ....I ask because I have an opportunity of owning either but not sure which would be a better investment.

Browning Safari - for one reason. Although there is certainly nothing wrong with the pre-64 M70, it is a modified M98 Mauser design. Nothing that has been done to the basic M98 Mauser configuration thus far hasbeen an improvement. Granted, the M98 bolt handle and safety had to be changed somewhat to accomodatea scope, the Browning incorporates those slight changes. In all other respects, it is still Paul Mauser's perfect bolt-action rifle.....pure and simple!

In addition, pre-64's are way overpriced these days!
