nub pretty much hit the nail on the head. You should have some idea which way the deer are moving (on their trails) and where the deer are feeding and where they are bedding. This can be a lot easier said than done. As an example, if you know deer are feeding in a field at night and bedding in a thick swamp in the morning, set up your stand between these points and be sure the wind is blowing in your face when facing the direction you expect to see them traveling.
