Holy crap, I think everyone needs to lighten up in here!
First off, I don't think mossbergman11 can even get a cell phone if he wanted to(by himself). I believe you have to be at least 18 and have some sort of credit history. He would NEED his parents to get it for him. Second, whats it matter if he pays for it, or his parents? If his parents are willing, and able to pay for his phone, good for him. I'm sure he does $30-$40 of chores around the house to pay for a phone in a month.
Third, for everyone saying cell phones aren't necessary do need to get out more. I do all of my business over my cell phone, I don't have a house line. I'm on my phone for at least 2 hours if not more a day. When you are on the road for a living, and buying/selling grain its a necessity.
And for the people who don't have a place to sleep at nite, 80% of those people do NOT do anything to try to better themselves, so why worry about them. If they get sick or hurt, we pay for them so why would they try to better themselves?
There's a difference between you and Mossy11. You're in your 20s and running a business, whereas he's 15 and a high school student.
I know you can buy prepaid cell phones without a credit check. I don't think you have to be 18 to buy one.
Mossy, I suppose you could feel like you're out of the loop without one. But not everyone has one. I didn't. My friends just calledme at home or we talked at school. I got one when I got married and pregnant, but that was mostly because I had an extremely difficult first three months.
Also I think it might have helped if you had clarified whether you were upset because your parents wouldn't buy you one or because they simply wouldn't let you have one even if you paid for it.
Once you start driving though, you'll have some excellent arguments for having a cell phone.
