I have been reading thru the bowyers trad bible, and it appears, any wood can make bows depending on the design. They showed that even pine or fir can make bows if you make them thin and wide enough. The author had a pine bow with a 4" wide width at midlimb that could double as skis.

They had a list of recommended widths for over 30-40 woods. That included oak, maple, hickory, typical hardwoods. It seems some woods however are just plain unsuited over how brittle they are.
