Default RE: Opinion on the 223 as a deer hunting cal ?

I set up a .223 for my son tohunt with for his first season- but after a day at the range I don't think he is ready yet.

When he is ready, what grain/style bullet would those who have been succesful with the .223 recommend?
I'd shoot as heavy a bullet as that gun can handle. If you have a fast twist (1:7 or 1:8) then you can get away with shooting 70 and 80 gr bullets. Might even be able to shoot 70s with a 1:9. If you have anything with a slower twist than that, stick with a 55-60gr bullet. Make sure its not a varmint bullet. You'll want a partition or TSX as recommended.
