RE: Big day...(updated w/Pics Day 1)
Wow, what a hunt!
I woke up at around 4:25 am, and I use the term “woke up” loosely, because technically I didn’t sleep much. I get too jacked up for the opening morning hunt, I can never sleep, happens every year [&:]I peer out the window, hoping to not see rain, and... well…I didn’t. I saw that beautiful white, cold substance we in Minnesota like to call snow. Snow? On April 26th? On opening day of SPRING turkey hunting? Hmm…snow[&o]. Whatever, I like a challenge, so..
I wake pops up, who is sawing logs, paying no attention to the alarm ringing in mom’s ear. I grab a Mountain Dew, and he his beloved coffee, we load up the ranger and drive to “the spot”.
We get there about 5:30, and I get the deeks out, all the while laughing to myself watching dad try to set up the matrix. 7 second set up? Not in his world!
So I got that set up, and we settled in for the morning. We forgot to dress for the 40 degree weather, but we’ll stick with er.
At around 6:05, one sounds out. I was no longer cold. Two more sound off, okay, I love turkey hunting. After a little calling and almost getting blown over by the wind, another pops off, another after him, three, five, seven, Holy balls[:-]. They were everywhere in the trees, all hot and bothered. We couldn’t see them, but they weren’t really incognito.
I’ve never heard as many turkeys as we did, today. It was bonkers. We never laid our eyes on a bird, but we know where they went, and where we’ll be in the morning. We heard somewhere around 15 birds, and 150-200 gobbles
. We’ve never heard that where we hunt, it was AWESOME. It was also nice to hunt with my dad again, we don’t get to talk much since I moved to college. It was a great day, but…Snow[&o]
