i have more land but this land is holding the bird that i have been watching. I have been using multiple calls. 3 different slates, a mouth call, adn a wing bone yelper. i have been using two different deke setups. one with a full strut tom and hens, and one with a reg jake with hens. hens are in both feeding and breeding positions. decoys are placed about 15 feet on my side of the fence. 23 acres is more than enough around here considering the amnount of turkey these areas hold. roosting is taking place anywhere from 150 to 300 yards away. closing the gap isn't the problem. i have called these gobblers to within fifty yards multiple times. but i cant get them to crest the last ridge to where they can see the dekes.
i will be hunting other land 3 days next week but i will be mostly calling and videotaping others. if two gobblers come in i will drop the hammer on one. the one i have my eye on believe it or not has at least a 12" beard. it is almost dragging the ground without him being in strut.
i guess persistence will eventually pay off. i'll be at it again in the morning.
