I've seen some dogs that go nuts.....and they're a JOY to hunt over. My Ashley was a laid back hunter/retriever. It cost her in some trials (subjectivity).....but her nose was unmatched by any I've seen.
Later in life I let her run banks.....and that was just fine. She was solid.
If I had duck hunting opportunities where I live now (in abundance)......I'd never have found deer hunting. These dog guys are spot-on...... If you've ever had those moments with your dog.....the one you trained......you know "that feeling".
YESSIR .... I remember we were pheasant hunting and my brother's Brit pointed a big male .... he got the shot and dropped it ... right on a small stack of reeds in the middle of a pond .... his dog jumped in .... swam to the winged bird, and chased it around the reeds ... the dog swimming, the bird able to walk on the patch .... he eventually got the bird and swam back across the water, delivering into my brother's hand.... it was such a scene that my brother teared up .... it was awesome ..
another time we both had our dogs ... mine was a Viszla .... I shot a bird over his dog ......he couldn't find it .. it was my pup's maiden voyage after MUCH training by me ..... I loosed her ... within 2 minutes she comes trotting over to me with said bird in her mouth ..... what a feeling that was ....
