It appears that this was caused by a scare tactic put out by some anti-hunter group with no basis in reality behind it. When the "news" hit, Iowa initially put a hold on the venison in food pantries (provided by the completely hunter supported HUSH program, Help Us Stampout Hunger). After pulling ten samples of ground venison and testing for lead, they found that 8 samples had no detectable lead and two had detectable, but less than 1 ppm, they canceled the hold. I believe several states are still in over-reactionary mode.
