RE: Your overall archery (buck) success rate?
8 for 12 = 67% I started bowhunting in 1996.
Here, we are allowed just 1 whitetail buck per season. Early archery is Sept 1-9, then the firearms season kicks in and lasts until Nov 24. After that, it's late archery until Dec 10.
SO - if I don't get a chance at a buck to my liking early, I often hunt the rifle season, usually during the rut in mid November. The years in which I get my buck at that time, I can only go for a doe during late archery.
I also let lots of bucks walk every year. Haven't yet shot any with the bow that match some of my rifle kills, but I guess that's no surprise.
Apparently I live in an area where the population is less than 15 per square mile, but it's extremely variable on a local scale and typically I see 20+ deer on a morning hunt.
Ohyes, another factor that has kept me from arrowing a nice buck on more than one occasion is that I hunt exclusively on the ground, using natural cover. Been busted more times than you can shake a stick at.
