WVSPORTSMAN-That is a SWEET rifle! I would really love one just like that, .308 and set up for long range shooting. Very nice. What kind of groups are you getting with that thing?

BigJ-That is very cool that yours is a Colt AND so close to that era of M16. I really wanted a Colt M4 style rifle, but the price was a little more than I could justify for a "toy".Thanks for the good read on the history on that year(s) of rifles, it was very informative. I really like the looks of that "old school" rifle. How often do you get to shoot it?
I get out and shoot it as often as I can. It's a little harder to find the ammo because it must shoot the older style M193 55grain ammo instead of the newer M855 62grain ammo used today. The reason is the rate of twist in the"old school" barrels in 1-12 and will not stabilize the newer heavier ammo where as the newer AR's I believe utilize a 1-9 or 1-7 twist. The newer rifles can shoot both but the older ones can only shoot the lighter ammo. Sure M855 will chamber and fire fine but out past 100yds the bullets loose their stabilization and start to tumble causing (asI'm sure you guessed) poor accuracy.

BTW the surplus M855 ammo utilizes theSS109 bullet...Way wicked. The original US Military M855 SS109 Penetrator ammo is a62 grain bulletwith steel tipped penetrating core for combat use. It moves out at about 3,025 f.p.s., and isthe ammo being used right now in Iraq and Afghanistan by U.S. Troops.

Probably the best .223 ammo for combat ever produced in the USA. I believe it's green tipped and if you can find them in boxes marked "Lake City Arsenal" (Salt Lake City) it's the real deal.

I found a pretty good deal on a few cases of M193 so I bought them up...I'm always looking.
