What can youtell me about this caliber? I see that it is available in the Ruger M77 Hawkeye. Is this a .308 Win that has been necked up to a .35 caliber bullet? How does this round compare balistically to the 350 Remington Mag? Who makes factory ammo for it? thanks, Bricat
Yes, the .358 is a .308 Win. necked up to shoot .358" bullets. It is a very accurate and powerful cartridge, being able to shoot 250-grain bullets at over 2400 FPS MV. It is not quite as powerful as the .350 R. Mag., or the .35 Whelen, both of which are essentially a necked-up .30/.'06 cartridge, as far as case capacities go. In addition to the .358 Win., today there's the .338 Federal, a .308 expanded to shoot .338 bullets. This is also an excellent cartridge, as is the slightly longer .338/'06.
