Well, there's a lot of open ground here. First, at what ranges are you expecting to get a shot at a deer at? If your normal and expected shot will be at 100 yds. or less, there is no need to sight in high at 100 yds. If you are hunting open ground and expect 200-300 yd, shots, then yes, sighting in for that range would be correct. One thing I would hope you would do is to actually shoot at the range you assume to be sighted in for. Unless you physically shoot that gun at known longer ranges, you really don't have a firm grip on the trajectory of your gun/ammo. The 250 Savage is one you don't normally see out there anymore, but is quite capable of killing deer and antelope sized game.
Just be sure you have a good grasp on where you are hitting at known ranges, and you should do fine.
