I don't think anyone wants the government telling us what we have to do.
The reason safety classes are good and should be manditory have nothing to do with the government. Us hunters should demand it of our newcomers.
1. I like the idea of knowing that all my fellow hunters have been trained. It makes me feel a little safer. Not all are safe anyway but at least the seed was planted.
2. It is ammo against the anti's. I can tell the anti's that we are alltrained to be safe and respect wildlife. This is important to tellto the people who are neutral on the subject.
3. many things are taught in safety classes that can be used in other areas of your life. Such as survival skills, first aid, respect for others and the environment.
4. Mentoring is great. But not everyone who starts hunting has a good mentor.
Also, not all the people who are getting someone involved are good mentors. Often these newcomers are being taught poor morals. At least their training will give them a basis to question some of these things. If your mentor is an outlaw what will you most likely become?
5. I f you want to be a good, safe hunter you should want to go. Don't look at it like it is manditory, instead view it as necessary. I recently put my daughter thru hunters safety. I have been hunting for 33 years and still I learned things.

I don't want to argue with anyone. I respect other peoples opinions. But I think that if you use your head, you would want proper training in anything you do be it football or cutting lawn. The reason training is made manditory is because of the people who don't voluntarily get the proper training and as a result get injured. In a perfect world "manditory" wouldn't be necessary. WE don't live in a perfect world! Also remember that our sport is under attact by the anti's. When one person does something wrong we are all affected.
