Default RE: For or Against Mandatory Bowhunter Education

ORIGINAL: Gundeck

So the kids of non-hunting parents will never be hunters? I know that isn't what you mean, but what about the guy who never shot a bow and wants to get into it along with his kids? The best way to start (besides lessons at the local pro shop) is the hunter ed program. Not only does it teach them some things about archery, but how it applies to hunting situations and how it differs from other kinds of hunting. It also shows some people that they are not ready to head into the field. Sometimes a rude wakeup.
That is exactly why the education is a good thing and should be available....but notnecessarily MANDATORY. The aboveargument in support of MANDATORY training courses applies to a small minority of potential hunters. Imposing something on ALL hunters simply because a few could benefit from it doesn't make much sense to me. Instead, make the training available for those who want it, and leave the rest alone to continue with their business.
