Yes, The land i hunt is public but there doesnt seem to be many hunters this year.
I normally hunt a puplic area that is over 800 acres, and there is a pretty good turkey population there. Thing is, there is adjoining private property that holds birds or shares the same birds as the public land. A couple years ago I was working what I figured to be a hot bird off the roost. I heard hens flying down also with him. After calling for about a half hour after flydown, I heard a shot towards some private property where I last heard him gobble. After a bit I walked the adjoining fence line and discovered his strut zone......on the private property.
My first year hunting there, I had a bird gobbling hard on and then off the roost for 1 1/2 hours. He never came to me but I trailed him to a ridge just across the property line where he was strutting. I finally gave up but came back around 10am. He was gobbling his fool head off right where I had been calling, so I sat down and called again. You know what he did? Made a bee-line RIGHT across the property line and back to that ridge. LOL. Cool thing is, that piece of property is part of the public land now.
I' d try and locate gobbling birds on the adjoining properties if they are timbered. Maybe you can call one over. Don' t give up.
