It all depends on what you are talking about. As far as dropping one on the spot every time there really are no guarantees. I have seen several studies that confirm it. Even a head shot doesn't guarantee it will drop on the spot, animals can still run after being decapitated.

I would say the most reliable shot is the high shoulder shot though, breaking both shoulders and shocking the spine is a pretty effective way to immobilize something. Doesn't mean it died that instant, but it certainly isn't going to far.

I feel it has more to do with shot placement and bullet construction than anything else.
