I am one of the people that doesn't totally buy the hot primer is bad because it pushes the bullet off the load theory. Even the small pistol primer will move some bullets off the powder depending on the weight of the bullet. A friend told me about a 38 he had that accidently got a round with no powder in it and the bullet exited the barrel just from the primer alone. There are also sub sonic 22 rounds that just use the priming for propulsion, no powder.

My theory is that some lots/brands of primers are more consistent than others. I have seen this when trying different primers when reloading for my CF rifles. One brand of primers often gives lower standard deviations than others in terms of velocity. Some times the differences are significant.
