Maybe. Depends on if the geese are pressured or not. I've called resident neighborhood geese into the olympic sized swimming pool across the street from the house (in the fall, when the cover is on and rainwater accululates)... same thing with ducks. But you are quite right in your assessment that they will not land.... and there is a fair chance they will skirt the tree line... calling back... expecting their fellow fowl to show himself in the open.
If they are resident birds that have not been pressured, the thing to do is find their daily flight line. Resident birds are creatures of very patternable habit. Easier to just find a spot where they are fairly low to the ground and sit still. Let them come to you. Just swing out in front of the HEAD. If you cannot clearly see the white patch under the chin, generally they are a bit too high.
You will have better luck calling a single over your head than the whole flock too by the way. A lost goose is a dead goose... especially a young one.
