From personal experience I can vouch that it IS necessary. Got thumb slapped TWICE by the bowstring on my original Termiantor. (Man that hurts!) That's likely why they made the forearm on the second randition of the Terminator so much bigger. (And not particularly appealing, IMO). This vented version is a long way from the deck, there is seemingly no way one can get any portion of the hand up onto the deck....if one hold onto the forearm while shooting.
What I was refering to was that it has an M16 stock and a forarm that looks like a vented stock for an AR rifle as in for protection for the barrel from heat.
