Sorry Frank but I think you're way off base in your ideas of wolf behavior. They don't rationalize their decisions to kill and decide to only kill the young or weak nor do they only take what they need. They are an apex predator and they kill. They kill at every opportunity they get. Granted the opportunities at young and sickly individuals is greater but don't think that they stop there. They'll kill anything they can get their teeth into and keep killing whether they can eat it or not. That includes healthy animals run down by a long breeding season or debilitated by heavy snowfall. It includes domestic stock that can't escape due to confinement (which is what led to wolves being nearly wiped out by poisoning and trapping; not hunting!). It includes young of the year that haven't got their legs under them yet and it includes your pet dog while you're out for a walk. (Parts of Anchorage have been closed this winter because of wolf kills on people's pets.) It's not uncommon to find half eaten moose carcasess or several caribou left because they killed more than they could use. Accept them for what they are but don't be blinded to what that is by rhetoric; they're predators and particularly indescriminant killers. If their populations don't warrant them being protected as "endangered" then they should be delisted and at least the excess should be hunted/trapped just like any other fur bearer. Personally, any of them that come within visible rifle shot of me are "endangered".
