I use a topical alcohol based pyrethrin product called pre-cor. Not all that long lasting but I am constantly checking my dogs for both for fleas or ticks.

I do not prefer to feed my dog any pill that makes the dog's skin systemic.

Yes there is soem data out there on certain insecticides used that hae caused some problems.
