I have
somewhat of a similar story, though not to the extent of the carnage as yours.
I was working in New Mexico in the middle of nowhere, around the town of Tucomcari. As I pulled up to this old abandoned farmhouse to take sample of the old water well, I noticed a flock of about 15 turkeys. When I got out of the truck, I was surprised to see them still there. I'm used to skittish Easterns, these Rios didn't seem that afraid of me. So, of course, I started calling with my mouth, trying to mess with them. Well the dominant gobbler immediately begins to side strut toward me and even let out the occasional gobble. I was completely shocked. I let him get within 10 ft of me, before I started getting worried that he was about to spur me, so I got back in the truck and started honking the horn. He immediately gobbled everytime I honked the horn. I then got out and took a few pictures before I left him alone and went back to work.
