They are loud, they can be quieted somewhat, but it really isn't necessary at reasonable hunting ranges. A deer out to 25-30 yards isn't going to have time to react.
I do have a Boo (catwhiskered)string, and it made a big reduction in noise which is easier on my ears!
I think the recoil/shock/vibration you feel through the stock makes it seem worse, too.
