You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent
One quick example will help clarify the situation.
Alaska brags about it's stable moose population of 140,000 animals for the last 10 years. Alaska's moose harvest is 7,000 animals yearly. Sounds OK until you consider statistics from similar areas where game is managed correctly.
Sweden, a country at about the same latitude, and 1/4 the size, maintains 500,000 moose and harvests 150,000. They harvest more moose each year than live in Alaska!
Sweden harvests almost 100 times more moose per square mile than Alaska. 100 times...
When game populations decline, they talk about reducing the limits in the US. Yet it is estimated that human harvest constitutes only about 5% of the mortality, whereas predation accounts for around 80%.
In short, there is no predator management in the US. And the game departments don't care, because most license fees go into the genaral fund, instead of funding the game departments.
