One person has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of an Americus teen while he was goose hunting Saturday, authorities said. "We have somebody detained," Lyon County Detective Travis Mishler said from Emporia. "Right now they're on their way from the Topeka area down to here."
Sheriff Gary Eichorn said the man is believed to be the owner of a pickup seen by witnesses at the time of the shooting. Beau Arndt, 18, was goose hunting with two friends Saturday morning in northern Lyon County when he was hit by a rifle shot fired from a pickup, authorities have said. Arndt and his friends had placed several dozen goose decoys in a field and were lying in the snow dressed in white when a pickup stopped along a nearby road and fired a rifle shot into the decoys. Arndt was hit and died at the scene.
A pickup matching the description offered by witnesses has also been seized, Mishler said.
Eichorn said investigators tracked down the truck and its owner in Topeka using rental records of a cabin near where the shooting occurred. "It was just good police work," he said.
Witnesses had described the truck as a red and orange 1970s-era Ford, possibly with a Shawnee County license tag.
