I don't think the spikes that Drop and HuntingBry are referring to are the normal circumstances though. Yes, occasionally a spike will never be more than a spike but most of them have a change to be better than that if they are allowed to walk. We've all seen the photo documentation of spikes in captivity growing up to be HUGE non-typs but that is under ideal conditions and nutrition. I'd shoot a big old fat doe over a spike any day of the week.
