I've been on this rifle kick lately. I live in NY where you can only rifle hunt for deer in certain areas. I bought a Mossberg ATR in .308 for deer hunting. Then i was kicking myself for not getting a pump or semi-auto. I've never had any passion for a lever gun, but all of a sudden I've been thinking about them alot. It seems like Marlin is the way to go from what I've seen. What rifle and what caliber would be good for big woods deer with the occasional field shot? Talk me into it!!!
I live in New York also and in one of the areas the state designated a "rifle area". The type of shooting we do here is mainly small fields and wooded hills. My favorite choice is the Marlin 336 in 30-30 topped with a Leupold 2-7x32 with heavy duplex crosshair. In combination with Hornady's new Leverevolution ammo and a rifle that is only 7 lbs. with a 20 barrel and a 300.00 price tag, you can't beat it. I took an 8 pt. Thanksgiving morning at 185 yards using this new ammo.
