more you can take dog hunting or in woods, the better.
in off season i carry a training pistol in woods,when my lab flushes grouse as we are walking trails etc for fun, i shoot into air..
i carry a dummy grouse with grouse scent on it.
after he is out 20 yds are so, i throw dummy in brush.

he comes back and finds it, brings it to me.he thinks its real bird.

you DONT need to kill a bird to train a dog.

another is to get portable rechargeable 1 million power spotlights.around 19 dollars

i trained dogs foryears at night with those lights on rabbits.
find a place, like school that has rabbits.
ask if you can use the light on weekends.

rabbits come out at night, bigtime.

i put light on rabbit,dog sees rabbit,off to races..
i have best rabbit hunting lab around,if i even grab the spotlight,he knows what we are going after..
