I didn't mention in my first post, but the deer I shot this year was shot straight through the front shoulder with a 220 grain dead center. It retained its weight very well (sorry, don't have a scale). I know an elk and a deer are 2 completely different animals. But, I think the key to the all lead bullet would be to use the largest diameter bullet possible, in this case the .45 that I mentioned previously.
