I did some research witha localMLspecialist and he said the 300 grain PR bullet was just to light for elk. He recommends powerbelt 405 grainHPlead bullets,changing from #11 percussion to musket percussion, andtwo 50 grain pellets of tripple 7.
I would really hesitate with some of these changes you might be contemplating...
How much time do you have before you are hunting? If your time is very limited then the switch to the PowerBelt might be the best alternative, but if you have time to develope something the PB would be way down on my list. You can get some 460 conicalsvery quickly from Utah (No Excuse) just callDave and he will send them to you.

These would IMO be a much better elk bullet and they should be just right for your GM barrel...
I do not like the thought of the mucket cap vs a #11
MAG cap but to ignite a t7 pellet in cold weather that might be what you need.
