That close of a shot you may want to aim just behind the shoulder, not straight through. I shot one last year at the same distance with my .270 and shot it through the ribs (I know, some of you will say waisted meat, but really how much meat is there on the ribs) and the deer just dropped and never took another breath or kick. The hole on the exit side was about the size of a coffee can, which surprised me with a lil .270 bullet. The point being, with nearly 3000 fps a shot that close is carrying a lot of energy and it has to go somewhere, if you hit solid bone like you did at that close of distance there is a good chance that even the best of bulletsmight grenade. At least you wounded him well enough that you where able to get a second shot off.
