RE: New to hunting - any advice???
Always, always, always hunt with the wind in your face. Keep your eyes open, deer are hard to see and even harder to hear.
Get a strong rifle, if they're allowed, use a 30-06 so that the deer will drop when it's hit. Don't use a 30-30, they don't have the knockdown power and you may not have a chance for a second shot at a wounded deer. Be sure you can hit something with whatever gun you choose. Aim for the heart/lungs when you have a shot, and if you can't get a good shot at the vitals, don't shoot.
Don't get too hung up on getting a buck. When I first started, 4 years ago, I got a doe the first day, and I still haven't gotten a good buck yet. Someday, I will, but they are much harder to hunt than does.
Good luck
