There are in fact cougars in Michigan. I just read an article in the Midland news The Michigan Wildlife Conservancy is asking Michigan hunters to help identify and protect endangered species...." it has detected cougars in widely separated areas both in the Upper and Lower Peninsulas." The article goes on to say that they are protected by state law.
