I usually use some short bursts, (er, er,er,er er) occasionally I will draw out the last grunt. I also like to cup the end and change the sound direction. This is if I am blindly grunting. If I see a deer I will grunt softer and shorter, if he responds. I will stop. They will usually stop and look for a while, sometimes a few minutes then they will either walk towards you or keep going the way they were headed. IF They are headed toward me, I don't grunt at all until they get close and I need them to change direction. My 2 cents
